Election Day is Over…

and together we have succeeded in electing Jill Gaebler to City Council!

Thank you for working alongside us as we walked this journey; we are so truly grateful. We have met so many neighbors, made new friends, and have heard the many and varied reasons why we all love Colorado Springs and want it to thrive.

Together we sent the message that Colorado Springs needs to support its local businesses, focus on revitalizing downtown, and become a more welcoming city that families and businesses want to call home.

Bringing Together a City

Today a big group of supporters walked in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade for Jill Gaebler for City Council. What a fabulous example of a great downtown event, that draws great numbers of diverse community members, galvanizing around a holiday, and together promoting a generous and welcoming community spirit. I couldn’t have been more proud to be a citizen of Colorado Springs, as we rode down Tejon Street, waving to neighbors and friends.

Colorado Springs is a beautiful city with a great pioneering spirit. Together we will accomplish great things.

Why We Serve

“Why are you running for City Council?”

Why do people seek a full-time job that pays less than $7,000 a year? There are a lot of reasons, but what is the right reason?

I submit that it is a servant’s heart that properly drives a person to public office. To be a councilor is not a reward or a mark of distinction. To be a councilor is to serve. We need those willing and able to serve.

To discern a candidate’s motivation you should parse their resume for a commitment to service. My record will reveal that I love this city and serve all its citizens. Moreover, I have served, and will continue to serve, all my constituents, in a full-time capacity. I have the passion and energy to provide the collaborative leadership needed to make Colorado Springs the destination of choice for businesses, families, and visitors.

Demand Good Governance from Your Councilmembers

When was the last time you went to a town hall meeting with your city council representative? When was the last time one was held?

Good governance is a two-way street. You need to communicate your concerns to your representative on important issues so they can properly represent the interests of those who have elected them. At the same time, your representative also needs to communicate to you information about those issues. When in place, this good communication helps the representative make the best decisions for our community.

I believe this is the heart of democracy and when I am a member of City Council, I will represent District 5 and its interests. I’m committing to monthly town hall meetings that will rotate within my district to communicate with the citizens whom I will represent. Mark your calendars. The town halls will be the third Tuesday of every month and the first three will be:

April 16 – 7:00 p.m. at Casa Verde Commons, 1355 Lindenwood Grove, 80907

May 21 -7 p.m. The Fox & Hound, 3101 New Center Point Dr. 80922

June 18 - 6 p.m. Nemo’s Coffee, 2114 E. Pikes Peak Ave. 80909

The Importance of Collaboration

This week there was a brouhaha during a City Council meeting, when Ms. Elizabeth Reed spoke before council, for at least the fifth time, about her mother, who lives in senior housing. Elizabeth’s mother is continuously bombarded with unwanted second-hand cigarette smoke, and she would like the city to help her mother find healthier housing. Council has told her they have no control over housing, and Bernie Herpin stated to the media that council has no control over the Housing Authority and that council is ‘powerless’ to assist Ms. Reed’s Mother.

This issue is exactly why more collaboration is needed on our City Council. As someone who works with many nonprofit organizations and other community groups, I, as your councilwoman, would have determined if other housing groups provided smoke-free housing, and would have then worked to accommodate Ms. Reed’s request.

My own nonprofit, Greccio Housing, just opened its first smoke-free property, and several members of council were invited to the recent ribbon cutting event, where Mayor Steve Bach helped to cut the ribbon and open this groundbreaking property. Greccio would be happy to work with Ms. Reed to quickly move her to affordable, and healthy housing.

Jill Gaebler Hosts Candidacy Announcement Event

Jill Gaebler formally announced her candidacy for city council in district 5, on January 3rd at Colorado Springs Charter Academy. Jill discussed her passion for our community, visibly displayed through the success of Colorado Springs Charter Academy, a school she co-founded, and how she will provide thoughtful leadership and a collaborative spirit to our city council.

Jill was introduced by friend and CSCA Board President Kobi Chumash, who spoke of Jill’s authenticity and integrity. The event was attended by many supporters, including Suzi Bach, Senator Keith King, Laura Nelson, Executive Director of the Apartment Association of Southern Colorado, Dave Anderson, and Al Brody.

Please watch for future events highlighting Jill’s leadership and collaborative abilities, along with her vision and priorities for a thriving community, one that we can all call “home.”
